I think that any "long strecthes of unfunny jokes" are times when it's being 'post-gag.' Even as such it's always worth looking at. Best thing out there. Jeff A Case in Point is a single-panel comic in the same style as the Far Side. It is not a Far Side ripoff. A Case in Point has its own unique style that you can't say was ripped off from anywhere. The jokes are hit or miss. Some of them are extremely funny, others are not, and there are occassionally long stretches of unfunny jokes.
