Secrets of the Universe is a webcomic created by Joel Furches and founded on July 7, 2003. The premise of the comic is loosely based around the adventures of a group of college guys at a bizarre and unusual school run by a shadowy overlord who enforces his rules through a group of enforcers in outfits similar to police riot-armor. Despite their presence, Mulligan College seems fairly free of riots. It does have a talking cockroach problem, however.

The students seem to cope with the strangeness and oppression of the school through underhanded jibes directed at the staff of the school and through escapism into computer gaming and role-playing, while simultaneously scheming to topple the menacing college professor, Dr. Matson. Joel’s art style appears at times to be deliberately crude, cartoony, and minimalistic, while at others it is more refined, sometimes mimicking a manga style and other times taking on the appearance of western comic books.

In addition to the Mulligan College storyline there are several spinoff stories that take place in the Secrets of the Universe comic strip, including a role-playing game the main characters play entitled ‘Mystic Techno Cowboys’, and an online game that is a stew of crime-drama, superhero story, post apocalyptic adventure, and fantasy game. This game is titled ‘Quiver’, and the adventures in this story compose a series of mini-comics titled ‘The Quiver Gambit.’
