The Mansion of E:
Outline:
The mansion of E is an enormous building filled with all manner of monsters and strange happenings. Sylvester and Mortimer, the mansions owners, together with Rosemary, a traveler who shows up for no reason, give us a guided tour of the madness.
Story / Writing:
The writing in the Mansion of E is very unique. The main plot (which as far as I've gotten is still about finding some pots) moves extremely slowly. As the main plot moves along, millions of bizarre little subplots about the mansion and its inhabitants are introduced. They're rarely wrapped up, just given enough exposition to leave you wondering about it.
And that's really the whole point of the comic, it's weird. There are all sorts of crazy goings-on in every nook and cranny of the mansion and you never know what to expect next. It puts you in a kind of daze where you're mystified but the oddness of it all. The writing is very well done.
Humour:
While the strip isn't really ever laugh out loud funny (or even really chuckle funny), the humour is noticably there and it's enjoyable. Most of the humour is surreal, which fits in nicely with the sheer bizarrity of the strip itself. A lot of the jokes invoke that "wha?" emotion, but in a good way.
Art:
The art works to convey the craziness that is the Mansion of E, but if anything it's the area where there's room for improvement. Some of the monster designs are very interesting (like the hat with an eye in it), whereas some others are somewhat bland. It would sometimes help if the art was more extreme or whacked out when zany things are going on. Also, over the year and six months that E has been going, the art doesn't change a heck of a lot. Bonus points for consistancy, I guess.
Final thoughts:
Mansion of E is a very interesting comic to read. It's quite different from anything I've read in a webcomic before, and that kept me reading through the archives (which are really big). It also does what it does very well, which is confound and dazzle the reader with a seemingly unending supply of unusual characters and stories. The only thing it could really use is a bit more flair in some of the artistry to get the full oddness across.
Recommended. Probably going on my links page next time I update it.
