Onyx is the story of Jen, a thief in the futuristic city of Cassiopeia. Adopted at birth by a corporation, Jen is one of many people to be raised and educated under a business firm\'s guidance. At the age of nineteen, her company provides a college education and a part-time job as a cafe barista, while in secret training her to be a corporate thief and saboteur.

The world is run by large conglomerates so powerful that governments are almost obsolete. Personal protection comes from the company that you are aligned with. Those without corporate sponsorship struggle to obtain employment, or education, and must fend for themselves against the many dangers in the world.

Cassiopeia is one of the largest cities in the world. Already extending into three states, available land in which to expand Cassiopeia\'s borders became nonexistent centuries ago. With its population booming developers built upwards, creating towering structures resting on the foundations of past architecture.

Corporate thieves, such as Jen, become so adept at finding the holes and cracks in the vast city, they are often referred to as “rats”. Rats are just one of many different types of agents corporations employ. Warfare is no longer fought between countries, but rather between rival companies where all sorts of battles are fought. Some legal and some not.
