Get The Code

Artifact is a sort of hero\'s journey, populated by an ensemble cast of space pirates, terrorists, freaks, and aliens as they run a terrible gauntlet that spans solar systems. They will unite because their only other option is to be torn apart. It is dramatic, character-centric science fiction. It has heart, but it also has explosions and people being mauled to death.

Hush 1/5
The comic is already a year old, and in chapter 3 with fast updates... and it gives the readers no reason to want to read on. It can\'t be qualified as a new comic anymore imo. A new comic is less then a year and maybe one to two chapters in. Totally agree on the confusing, in fact I think it\'s a nice way of putting it, the comic has no point!

The massive amount of characters are hardly innovating and with the change in who we follow lasting for about a page a day, it just gets confusing. The script is also full of flabby dialog choices, exposition constantly, and god knows what the characters know!

Don\'t even get me started on the wooden characters and the poor interaction, melodramatic in a bad way and most of them don\'t even feel like they\'re connecting in an emotional way at all. Course anytime we get two characters on the same page talking to each other, they\'re expositioning about something rather then, oh gee I donno, showing they\'re humanity?

The story is so far a bunch of tell and not show who this big threat is. Or why we should care about these characters who would die at the drop of a hat. What to create tension in the situation? That\'s terribly wasteful, and makes the whole thing make us not care about the characters since at any moment they\'ll just die to create oh no tension. Look at the about section and look how many characters are listed dead. Seven. There are seven dead \'listed\' characters with names like we would have known them and cared about them. All of them where just fluff for killing and are forgotten about even by the characters within five pages. These people are their friends, long time allies, a person they look up to, and what do most of them get? Five seconds, maybe one line, then get killed and the other mains just shurg it off like not big deal. Nice.

The story is essentially a chase and hiding sort of story (from what I can get out of the exposition mess) But there\'s just so many things wrong with the comic from the characters to the pacing it\'s just hard to follow.

There\'s also just little things that just don\'t make sense, and is just padding and wasting pannels. In one whole page, the Porter character goes and gives a -paper note- to someone to have them visit her in the main area right away I\'m assuming. Why not use an intercom or a phone on the ship to do so? It wasn\'t in secret either, Porter gave the note in front of the woman husband, and the meeting happened right away. It was just a waste of a page and made it seem absolutely pointless, and this is supposed to be a scifi, use some technology on your ship that they have in luxury houses since the 90s or earlier! The reaction to seeing the Artifact the first time as well, from Luckless, \"who are you\" after seeing a mass of who knows what that is turn into a woman right in front of him. I don\'t think that\'s a very logical reaction at all for the situation.

In the forums, there\'s a review of the comic, and as it turns out the writer purposely wrote it this way to make the readers feel stupid. Why should we, the readers, give a crap about a comic even a little bit if it\'s purposely trying to make us feel stupid reading this?

Also, I\'m being hard on this comic. I really am, but you know what? Sometimes, a comic needs a hard hand and not fluffing about coos of aw this is good when it\'s really not. This comic could have potential, but it drops it on the ground in chapter 1.

One out of five.
limonverde 3/5
I think it has a lot of potential and will get a lot better. All new comics suck for a while. I think in a few months to a year, it\'ll totally be worth it.
Toxi Mox 1/5
A confusing mess of a comic that jumps narratives too much and also lacks in any sort of focus. A scifi that hardly feels like a scifi at all, and is a confusing mess. AVOID unless you enjoy being lost and confused.
