Synopsis:
Best description is probably a Final Fantasy parody. We're talking old-school Final Fantasy, with the main characters being Fighter, Red Mage, Theif, and Black Mage. Supposedly, they're destined to save the world. But one's an idiot, another's considered delirious, the third a greedy kleptomaniac, and the final one a stabby, murderous psychopath. Nothing seems to go right for them, but the result is pure comedy gold. If you don't find this at least mildly funny, check yourself into an asylum. And last but not least, a quote:
"What part of being stabbed do you not understand?" - Black Mage

Not bad, this comic strip is so funny. How could this four damn creatures who happens to be on an evil side become heroes.LOL!!!
I-Wanna-be-a-Marysue 3/5
8 bit theater is tired. It was good in the beginning, but after a while, it just started feeling like the same thing over and over. Good FAQ though.
joeyecw 4/5
I\'m just starting to read this strip (only about 16 episodes in) and I love what I see so far. I love that the creator of this strip has proven that you don\'t need to be a cartoonist to create a comic, that there are ways to showcase your writing without having to write a novel (which he\'s done anyway). I love it.

I can\'t speak for the repetitiveness of the jokes, as I\'m still in the first year, but I can say this: it\'s great so far.

For a strip that, on the face of it, looks like it could very well be the most niche-marked strip on the web, the humor is actually quite broad. Broad enough that many of the gags don\'t require the reader to have ever immersed themselves in the game worlds the art of the comic lampoons.

It would have been very easy for this strip to appeal only to fanboys and ubergeeks. It could have been another Penny Arcade, or even the occasional episode of Ctrl+Alt+Del, where you only get the joke if you\'ve played a particular game. So far, the mind behind 8-Bit Theater has ensured that the comic is accessible to not just gamers, but everyone who likes a good laugh.

Keep it up, and I can\'t wait to keep reading.
Stormblazer 2/5
I honestly don't understand how this appeals to people. It's funny and good at first... and then it's just the exact same jokes over. And over. And over. One of the most repetitive webcomics I've ever tried to read. The best joke in the world isn't funny the 50th time.
Charmander2008
I Thought Of it as one of the top 5 list for
best comics. You did really awsome! =]
bob&mike
There is a sadness in this world, for we are ignorant of many things. Yes. We are ignorant of many beautiful things. Things like the truth. So sadness, in our ignorance, is very real. The tears are real. What is this thing called a tear? There are even tiny ducts, tear ducts, to produce these tears, should the sadness occur. Then the day when the sadness comes, then we ask: “Will the sadness, which makes me cry, will this sadness that makes me cry my heart out, will it ever end?” The answer, of course, is yes. One day the sadness will end.
jayngfet 3/5
decent and there has been some recent character development...for once
Tanooki1432 5/5
Insanely funny.
I love this comic. Constantly updated, always funny. A great comic.
Black Mage for the win.
Fission 5/5
Frick. Ing. Awe. Some.

Why do you people have a problem with it? Humor is humor. Humor is awesome. And this is humor. Thus it is awesome.
EthelE 3/5
I like it - a good humor strip, every comic has a punchline (and usually several punchlines). The humor is darker than what I generally prefer, the author relies heavily on running gags (not necessarily a bad thing), and semi-random violence is a common theme. A large number of D&D / FF / gamer culture in jokes is what makes this comic shine.

8-bit Theater is nearly the closest thing to a webcomic classic - after User Friendly.
isaac17 5/5
It has gone downhill a little, as of late, but it's still absolutely hilarious and the archive is one of the funniest around. A must read for everyone.
sethcampbell 5/5
wow, top shelf.
71 The Roman 5/5
You have to admit, as far as sprite comics go, this is DEFINITELY one of the best. I'm still reading through the archives right now, but it has all been really good.
talyhawk 5/5
Great comic, it shows an alternate reality to that which is old school Final Fantasy. While it's a spirte comic, it's a very well done sprite comic. The humor in the thing is always rather fresh, and even though the characters don't change much I wouldn't want them to. I mean who would want Black Mage to change from the evil little murder he is, that alone makes Black Mage who he is.
brown_recluse_gundam 5/5
OMG!! I just got through the entire archive. This is the stupidest and most idiotic thing I've ever read. Genious!! I've been a fan for a while, but I've never been able to go through the entire archive. There were so many laughs that I had missed. I recommand that you take the time to go through the archive because you never know what you might have missed. Hell! I'm gonna go through it again soon as I'm done with this. SWORD CHUCKS, YO!
NullTermination 4/5
Yeah, it's a sprite comic, but it's a good sprite comic. You can tell Brian puts a lot of work into each comic. The writing is also fantastic. The only downside is it's one big lump of continuity. So it can be hard for someone new to the comic to jump right in.
lamer 5/5
Very, VERY funny! A great lesson on writing excellent humor.
thekungfuman 5/5
Taught me everything I know...except the stuff it didn't teach me.
lordslayer89 5/5
aaaaaand i forget to rate it.
lordslayer89
greatest sprite comic ive ever read.
and yes, rohk, febreeze solves all.
unionavenue 5/5
first let me say that I normally can't stomach sprite comix. I just can't grasp them on a visual level but this strip is so well-written that it could be pictures of macaroni art and it would work. NICE!
tcrpgfan 5/5
Forgot to add 1 thing: best gming webcomic evr
tcrpgfan 5/5
8-bit theatre, it is two things:
a) consistently funny, and
b) one of the most legendary webcomics in the history of th hobby.
I mean, how often does a webcomic, or any thing with multiple genres, poineer it's particular genre.
(What it's genre is is a given) and it came up with two phrases in a webcomic i will always remember: I LIKE SWORDS! & SWORD-CHUCKS, YO!
solara080290 5/5
love it! hillariously funny & more than a little crazy. plenty of explosions (YAY!). best comic i've found yet!
agsgdafsh 5/5
Hands down, THE best sprite comic, ever. Over 700 comics and still going strong, it will take you a LONG time to get through if you are just getting to read it.
However, each comic is hilarious. Not every one is perfect, no. But they are ALL funny in some way.
Rohk 5/5
I pity anyone that dismisses this comic simply because it is a sprite comic. Sure the art isn't the greatest but the hilarity still shines through.

Also if you like 8-bit check out the extras, namely Twinkin' Out. It is just as, if not more, ridiculously funny.

Febeze solves everything
D-Wolf2k2 5/5
This is one of those RARE comics that keeps the funny even after all this time. So what if it's a sprite comic? It's still funny! I LIKE SWORDS!!
L'ope 5/5
It's incredibly witty writing. The characters show little development, but they are so funny you don't want them to change anyway. The story flows convinvingly and puts an interesting spin on the original final fantasy story. The violence and hatred between the main protaganists is gloriously excessive, and makes you savour the rare moments of harmony between them and at the same time you can't wait for the violence. Always with the violence. Its a sprite comic, so it can get away with it.
Mr. Man 5/5
Sprite comic. But the best damn sprite comic there is. Awesome.
Xplice 5/5
this comic is leckt, thats all i can say bout that

Linkmask77 5/5
The storyline is always fresh, and never gets dull. Somehow, i still laugh when fghter gets stabberd in the head. Hee hee. And amnesia dust is funny too. Add anther 5 stars to my ratng. No, make it 6.
jpers36 5/5
Great stuff.
Beholder18 5/5
My personal favourite for more than a year. I just can't get enough of it! All my stars belong to this, and I mean ALL.
CraseZ58 4/5
this is cool
ABYSS_GK
The number one reason to read 8-bit..... Black Mage. I just love the little demon to death.... quite literally
James Mancuso 5/5
A wonderful webcomic. I've gone to the first comic and read through the entire comics numerous times, devoting large chunks of my day to getting a number of chuckles. I <3 this thing.
mr.x 5/5
i love this comic
Chilari 5/5
Sword. Chucks.

Who else would think of it? How else would it fit? Probably the coolest weapon ever, and that includes the future. Absolute genius, the whole thing. The characters are just so well-formed, and the whole thing is so funny.

Though I am a little confused at the comic being called "the interview" all of a sudden - crazy scariness. Ah well.
whetstone
or maybe i'm a n00b and anyone can post any comic regardless? If so- why is jonthehat listed as the author?!
whetstone
Who is this 'jonthehat' that is claiming to write 8-bit? Everyone knows it's Brian Clevinger and he goes by Kurosen on the website. If I knew how to flag this entry I would.
GreyMage 5/5
I personally think that this comic is hilarious, what it lacks in graphisc it makes up in comedy, and the special effects are dazzling considering it is a sprite comic, I've read them all and I always catch every update, one of my favourite webcomics ever.
picatrix 5/5
Still makes me laugh after all this time :) Well-crafted characters with a good dose of humor.
swordfan 3/5
I'd say you can find sprite comics for a dime a dozzen, but I'd be ripping you off, there seem to be hundreds of them out there.

But a GOOD sprite comic is a hard to find, and there are only a handfull. If this is what your looking for, in my opinion, this is one, it may not be for everyone though. I just wish more sprite comic authors would realize that if your going to use sprites instead of art work it's going to be tough making it enjoyable, this is one of maybe 3 that I've seen so far that made the cut.
zooker 3/5
It's not bad, but it's definately not for everyone. Addmittedly, I'm one of the poeple it's not for, and my judgement may be swayed by this.
Green 5/5
8BT is the alpha and omega of humor and circular logic. It has wonderful jokes and, unlike some other comics, continuity! Brian Clevinger is a great writer; buy his book if you can.
If you give him a low score because he uses sprites, you are too closed minded to give an objective analysis in the first place. Leave your jealousies and prejudices at the door, and you will love this comic.
wodan46 5/5
This comic is the king of Final Fantasy Sprite comics, while Bob and George rules the Megaman Sprite comics. This guy uses sprites the same reason Order of the Stick uses stick figures, which is that its appropiate for the flavor of the story. Brian Clevinger writes some of the most exceptional dialogue I've seen in any webcomic, and it clashes wonderfully with the simple sprites.
the mystical one 3/5
Not as funny as it used to be, but it has its moments. One of the few decent sprite comics in existence.
Jessi D 5/5
The first webcomic I ever read and still the funniest (even beats Crtl-Alt-Delete). I wish there were more stars I could give it.
lunatic 5/5
this is kool i love FF stuff and this is amasing see mine its about mages too and magic cheers :D
http://darkrediris.keenspace.com

thank you :D
please leave a comment cheers
kudos 5/5
this is excellent stuff. lmao
keth 5/5
there are simply no words to describe the perfection that is 8-bit theatre
wasureru 5/5
Being an FF fan is almost a prerequisite to reading this.

I have yet to meet an FF fan that disliked it, and vice-versa.

This comic has had me doubled up in tears laughing on many occasions.
HoneyBadger 5/5
I can't wait to read the next strip! This comic inspired me to create me own comic, and also to search the web for other greats... This is still me all-time fave though...
Jenny169 4/5
The first webcomic I ever read, and one of my favorites. Not as creative as it used to be though.
GrenghisKhan 5/5
The only sprite comic I enjoy. Absolutely amazing. Brian is hands down the best writer working on any webcomic thus far. One of the few, one of the great.
Septher 5/5
Comedic genius, the guy CAN kick ass with just writing his rants.
maverick 5/5
hahaha. this is simply a classic. pure comedic genius.
inuyasha 5/5
This comic is the best I read it all the time I like swords
blank 3/5
Fun story, nice characters (the best character, Black Mage, is a Bun Bun ripoff, though), sometimes funny... here is a comic I can respect.
Everyone giving this less than 2 stars is just jealous =)
Misanthrope 5/5
Actually funny. Since when did people start writing good dialogue in webcomics, because that's not right.
cromier 5/5
best series ever
Hardrockfoo 5/5
this comic is so grate that in dungins and dragons, my friends have made chericters exactly like redmage, blackmage and fighter (he evin has swordchucks that work). as im trying to make a theaf. i have also made a pair of swordchucks in ampguard
wutasumi 5/5
Ok, this is a good comic. While it's been lacking a bit in the later bit, it managed to pull itself out of the grave unlike AMD or BnG. A truely wonderful webcomic, written by a person I would want to meet IRL, wait, that'd be Ryan Sosa. Not Brian Clevenger. My mistake. Oh well, great comic.
Kay-chan 5/5
I like the fact that this is one of the few comics I read that doesn't need to rely on its art. It's a written joke with a little visual aid. If you focus on the art, you're missing the point of the thing. It's 8-BIT: very few pixels. You know... the original game? Yeah. If you still think that the art is the main reason you don't read it, then... you're... a poopy-face... (I wonder if I'd get censored?) SWORD-CHUCKS YO! (Fighter's kinda slow!)
Bass_Virus 5/5
Truely the greatest web comic ever made! The characters are unforgetable the plot is insane a true must read.
twitch360 3/5
A sprite comic saved my decent writing.
Donny
In reply to Plotless Violence:

All sprite comics are considered parody under the Fair Use Rule of the United States Copyright Act of 1976. There are also plenty of sprite comics that parody the events of the games they're based on but hey, those don't star Square-Enix characters so we can forget about them. The fact is that NOTHING excuses the use of sprites as the focus of your webcomic. Unless of course, they're home-made like Kid Radd or A Modest Destiny.
Manga Turtle 5/5
one of the bestcomics that i have come across since calvin and hobbes. i love the comedy this is the funniest comic that i have veiwed of all the webcomics. the animation is great as an 8-bit and the charecters are represented hilariously. this is the funniest comic that i have ever seen. the script is awsome too. manga turtle gives this a five.
ninjafeathers 5/5
indeed a perl before sprite comic swine
PlotlessViolence 3/5
To respond to the below poster, I'll say that it's a cow because this is the only sprite comic I have ever seen with sometimes-funny dialogue.

Typically, Sprites are the ultimate cop-out, a way of being even lazier than stick-figure drawing. Hence, web"artists" who use sprites tend to be uncreative and unwitty.

In this case, the sprites are justified because the entire comic parodies that single game instead of merely referencing it .(Note: if you can't tell the difference between parody and reference...well, you're qualified to direct Scary Movie 4. But I won't watch it.) Also, use of Photoshop means that SOME effort was put into the strip beyond the very first one.

It's still not nearly as good or funny as its ranking or popularity imply. But it's not unreadable.

I wish I could give 2 1/2 stars.
Donny 2/5
Like Sinfest, if you've read the first 100 or so comics then you've pretty much read them all. Why this is a sacred cow among those who despise sprite comics eludes me.
codemonkey85 5/5
Ahhh, incompetence... the main theme behind 8-Bit Theater. For those of you who don't know, Nuklearpower.com actually began as an Internet "Fortress of Solitude" for Brian's book, "Nuklear Age", another tale of incompetence in the face of adversity (or adversity in the face of incompetence).

8-Bit Theater started off as a side thing, but has evolved into one of the largest one-shot jokes in the history of cyberspace. Because that's all it really is, it is one ridiculously long joke. The punchline? We won't know till we hit the end, is my guess. Hopefully it won't be too soon, 'cause this is one of the most well thought out and incredibly funny comics I've ever read.

The thing is, it's not just about humor. There is a message being relayed, something to the effect of "people are dumb". And yet, the dumbest people of all are often the most successful. Just like in real life! It's great, see?

Now, I'm not going to say you have to be a fan of video games, comics, tabletop roleplaying, or other silly geek stuff in order to enjoy this comic. But it would help. There are references and some entire strips dedicated to this sort of thing, but in the broad scope of things, it's only a small portion of the comic. There is plenty of humor for other groups as well. If, for example, you are a fan of Monty Python and/or Douglas Adams, this is for you. Not that he parodies them (much), but it is noticibly similar humor, with a "Brian twist". You'll see what I mean.

In short: this comic deserves at least a good long look. If you don't like it after ten or so comics, well, try again.
papatrouter 5/5
As a long-time final fantasy fan, this comic is genius! Made me want to pull out the old 8-bit system again, FF with a twist ;o)
nightrider69d_AT_hot 5/5
The 2nd funniest webcomic, memorable characters and intelligent humor and dialogue. 8 Bit Theater proves that not all sprite comics are poorly made pieces of crap.
Falos 5/5
The true sprite medium, rather than used to ctrl+v all over the place. Art is masterfully Photoshop'd and the story is grand. Cliché on Fighter and Black Mage, but I've never seen that as a problem. 5 stars of course.
Bob-the-cow 5/5
Ok well this is in response to "StupyStuperson" and "Jon The Killer". First this is a sprite comic, which means that yes all of the chracters are predefined, and everything is all ready made.....WAIT!! THERE IS A STORYLINE THATS YET TO BE MADE!!! This comic doesnt focus too much on the art, cause its already made, but focuses more on the storyline which has gone well over 400 comics of 1 continuing story which is great....armoir of invincibility....Next is someone saying PA will own this crap.....Ok well your just an idiot, this is a comic based off of a game, PA is a comic made to make fun of games. They really cant be compared because they are like night and day, except they are both cool, ok I can't fool ya anymore 8-bit pwns (yes I used pwns, just shows how l33t I am) PA. Why?!?! PA is less humourous to me. PA is still funny but 8-bit well......lets just say it......pwns j00!!!!
Kneefers 5/5
What can one say that already hasn't been said? 8-Bit Theater rules. I know of nothing comparable to it but Ctrl+Alt+Del...
Gleezus 4/5
I'm a huge FF fan... what can I say... black mage rocks!!!
Jon The Killer 1/5
Did somebody forget about out Penny-Arcade completely owns this comic in every way??
StupyStuperson 2/5
Wow!!1!1 this guY !s suchc a gratE Rtist!!1! How does he make thEse great pieces of pixelated crap?!?!1?!
Jeremy Woods 3/5
Not a bad comic. Worth checking out.
Eric 5/5
This comic is hilarious. Sword-Chucks forever. :)
Hiro Tomokiri 5/5
It's really hard to tell which is better. Ctrl+Alt+Del or 8-Bit Theatre? Well, 8-Bit Theatre's my personal favorite. There's no other sprite comic as well crafted as it.
Shay 5/5
Excellent piece of work. Ridiculous bad guys, and good guys who just don't have a clue. The poor heroes have so far literally been to hell and back. And as for those who are suposed to guide these 'Light Warriors' to their destiny...well, they're having a hard time of it.
alex manghan 5/5
woo and yay its a great inspiration for my webcomic PIEMAN which i hope will be added soon in the meanwhile to keep this site up and running VOTE ALEX FOR KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
alex manghan 5/5
this is the greatest series ever
ham 5/5
