Boy oh boy, Melange has responded to his own post on Comics Curmudgeon about 30 times so its about time I actually read his comic to see why he is so proud of himself LOL.
First impression is the art is terrible. It looks like its drawn in MS Paint with a mouse, although I have the feeling its intentional. My guess is Melange finds it amusing, ironic or \"cute\" that he couples his witty and creative writing with such crude art. However it comes across as lazy, and borderline arrogant, as if Melange feels his writing is so strong that he doesn\'t need to put effort into his art. The character itself is fine, and his expressions and interactions with backgrounds (usually photos) is OK, it would just benefit from being drawing with a tablet in a vector program. It doesn\'t need to be highly detailed or fancy, just make it look like some effort went into it. Tablets are cheap these days, and there are plenty of free and adequate vector illustrators, so there is no excuse.
Of course, if one can get past that, Navy Bean is actually really funny and well written. I get the feeling that Melange is very intelligent and puts a lot of thought into each comic. I would like to see what he could do with a little bit better art. |
