Hello everyone.

I have been self-studying and learning how to draw / start a comic, and I've been a lurker for a while. I am at the point that I need to start connecting with others to expand my knowledge and achieve any progress. I have been hesitant to post in the past for fear of criticism, which I am now realizing is the only way I will improve.

You can see some of the progress I have made while learning here:
http://www.botzero.com/misc/

I've used various online resources to get to this point, and I more than welcome any suggestions on how I can improve.

Writing seems to be the toughest part of this, I've attempted collaborating with some work buddies, but nothing ever comes to fruition. I've seen alot of posts asking for artists, and wonder, is my art good enough?

As a side note, I've done all this with a mouse, in flash, in Linux (Running under Wine). I am going to be purchasing a wacom very soon to get to the next level, as I can do much more by hand then by mouse.

I'm looking for any suggestions that can help me improve, and get this going seriously.

Thanks.

You draw a lot better than many of the people who come by asking for artists can write.

I agree. I don't think there's anything wrong with your art (especially if you've been doing it with a mouse!).

You may just have to face the possibility that work buddies do not good artistic partners make. Wink

I think if you were to make a pitch on here you would have a good chance of finding a writer. Especially since there usually seem to be more "writers looking for artist" posters than the other way around. Very Happy

Do you have any specifics for the kind of comic you want to do?

I'm really looking forward to getting the wacom. It will speed up the process alot and give me more freedom. Of course that means learning PS as well. I've been using flash just because thats what i started learning with. I'm hoping i can do much more with PS.

I'm not set on any type of comic type really, but i seem to be enjoying the one shot type. I tried a series style as my first shot, and felt a bit constrained. I really enjoy making new backgrounds and charecters, so the one-shot style seems to allow me to experiment and play around more.

I do have ideas for storylines, but i get burnt out trying to tackle it all myself.

Yeah, you're good enough. Nothing wrong with using Flash.

As said, you draw better than many of the people coming by looking for artists can write. Being an artist looking for a writer is sort of like being a woman. There are a lot more writers looking for artists. Your art's average quality for the one-shot comic genre and I don't think you'll have trouble finding a writer.

That said, my one criticism would be the copy-pasta in the 'where I am now' comic. I think the art's quality and would've liked to see a bit more variation rather than just the same panel four times.

For done-with-a-mouse, I am impressed. I know what it's like to paint with a mouse. Smile (I paint, but you know, it's still digital art done with a mouse.)

Good info, thanks..

I was trying to start focusing on writing, so I figured go with a "template" of sorts for the artwork. I have since changed that idea, and am now plan on coming up with new art for each one-shot. I too was not happy with the fact that the art didn't change in those 4 panels.

done-with-a-mouse: It sucks with how long it takes to make a character, but the good thing is that they are all ready to animate. The arm / legs / head / body are all separate movie clips, so in the future this will be great for short animated series, etc.

some of these drawings strongly remind me of south park. which isn't really bad, tons of people draw comics in anime style, why not in south park style? and i've always believed that copying the style of artists you admire is a good way to learn, there will be time to develop your own style as you discover what it is exactly you like about other people's work.

forgive me if the resemblance is complete coincidence, or if you really hate south park and are super insulted.

could definitely find some better fonts than the ones you're using in your speech bubbles. www.blambot.com

Be wary of copy paste, like in the last comic on that page. If a character isn't doing much, you can always just change the point of view from panel to panel. Try showing what the character describes instead of showing them writing it, the third panel could be him about to tea-bag a remote, for example. although in this case, tea-bagging might be something better read than illustrated.

anyhow, you've got some skill, so you're ahead of the game. keep it up.
