I like how this opens up the old male/female character discussion to a new level of thinking about it. I think the limits of that option showed in the discussion, making it a question of doing it nonetheless or not. (Or how.)

Personally, I think the third option is most inclusive. (Supporting character could include the antagonist, too.) It's also least controversial, which may or may not be a good thing.

I don't think protaganist / antagonist is workable, many stories have characters who's statuses are more complicated than these two poles. Also I thinlk the number of comics with recognisable antagonists is actually fairly small.

Otherwise of the two other options I prefer Male/Female, but it's no big biggie for me.
