Really! For me, after reading tons of Marvel comics with that huge white man running his mafia'ish business, it felt rather odd to me back then. Almost like if Dr. Doom was Asian.

It could be that Kingpin subconsciously reminds me of President Kekkonen, who ran our country for a quarter of Century, having very "physical" image and practically Dictator-like political power, with a quality suitable to lead one's thoughts into kind of criminal organisation even. Some say, "He was a crook but he was our crook".

Asian Dr. Doom could work pretty easily.

You just relocate his fictional country.

I honestly think people get waaaay too caught up in this stuff when they argue that changing a nonessential physical characteristic is bad for the character.

Unless being part of a particular group is important for the character (such as Wonder Woman being a woman, or a character being part of an opressed minority), who cares? And since most characters drawn by western artists default to "white dude" because of societal privilege, it's usually not important enough to matter if you gender or race flip them to something less common.

Agreed. Kingpin SHOULD be one massive mother&*^%er. MCD fit that bill perfectly. I liked him in the role and thought he was just fine in what was otherwise an awful movie.
