I saw on a comic's forum a thread asking how people found the comic. For that one in particular, I just saw an ad for it. I was kinda dismayed that's all I had to say about it.

Anyway, I'm curious if people have stories to share about how they have found a comic. Any comic. It's story time.

One of the more unique stories of how I found a comic was how I found Culture Shock.

I was searching on google for funny fake motivational posters. I came across a forum that was creating and posting such posters to match a D&D setting. (It was a D&D message board.) Someone was creating posters using scenes from various comics. For example, they took a picture from Dr McNinja's "Punch Dracula" story, and captioned it something to the effect of "Unbalanced encounters: This is the face of a man who has to defeat Dracula with his fists or escape from his moon base."

They showed it with the caption "A good GM knows how to keep things interesting." While amusing, the part that was really funny was the comic. Thankfully, the post also included a link to said comic, and I began reading it. I loved the comic so much I listed it as one of my top ten webcomics last year.

Also, an interesting irony: At the time when I first started reading that comic, I was living in the same town as the guy who creates it. (I never knew that until after I moved.)

[Casual Notice]

I learned about Oglaf when I was asked to do the artwork for the color comics award for the 2009 (? 2010?) TWCL awards (Also Dresden Codak, but I lost interest when I found the artist unwilling or unable to maintain even a spotty production schedule). That's the oddest story I have about "finding" a comic. All the rest have been when intentionally trawling through lists or via PW and direct ads on someone else's site (okay, once or twice I've clicked on a TWCL thumbnail I thought looked interesting--that's how I found Dire Man).

Erm... most of them that I've found I've either found by raiding my friend's favourite's list on her computer, clicked links on other comics, clicked links here, or had someone give me a link.... also deviant art. I randomly browse through DA once and a while looking at all the stuff that's prettier than my art and once in a while come across something for a comic.

Seriously? If he gets paid nearly a million dollars, he promises to maintain a schedule that would get him fired from a $30K job with a publisher or syndicate? That's priceless!

And if me makes a million, he's remake Jurassic Park with historically/palaeontologically accurate dinosaurs...

*meh* He's doing well enough without a regular schedule so I'm not sure the comparison really matters.

I found some erotic art online that really blew me away, and each one was signed rather enigmatically: "Ratbat". I did a bunch of google-fu, landed on a Furry wiki with a stub article on the artist and a link to a... webcomic!

My Atomic Robo story is that I was looking for reference photos of Carl Sagan so I could paint a portrait of him in egg tempera as a mantid (art school) and stumbled across 2 panels of Carl from a comic book and he was talking about pornographic material for robots in a very, very, serious manner. It was part of a blog post that was doing a write-up for the (first or second) issue of the series. I torrented what I missed, and have been buying the floppies and trades ever since.

Glorious irony, your comic is the only one I've ever found in a... erm... interesting way. I found it via your signature link. Suffice to say it was not on a comic site, nor was it a site I expected to find a well-written, nicely illustrated webcomic linked from someone's signature but I am extremely attentive to things like surprise webcomic links on adult-focused websites.

The internet is a very small place sometimes.

After that, the most interesting finding of a comic was probably having someone tell me I NEEDED to read Homestuck. It was a guy I met IRL who I knew from webcomics, we met all of once and from that meeting, I got one thing: an unfortunately fangirlish obsession with Homestuck.

Pretty much everything else was links pages, ads, comic forums, and a few recommendations from online friends kind of thing.

That effing website, my god. Let's just say... that the one person there that I have any sort of camaraderie with is the mother of an old high school friend.
