Old projects revived: # 2 "Medusa's Mirror - online pdf. Comic-fanzine"
Some years ago I started an online-pdf-fanzine, now I would like to do something similar together with other artists.
I. The basic idea: A free pdf-comic-magazine in the style of Vampirella.
(If you don't know: Vampirella and the two other Warren-magacines recycled the concept of the 1950ies EC-Horror-comics. There was a character who acted as host of the magacine and introduced the stories (usual with a pun.) It was always the same character, but drawn by different artists. In Vampirella there was also a comic added including the host as character.)
II. Details & how would it work:
- The fanzine would be black&white only.
- Each issue would contain works of different artists, a few pages of continuing stories and some gag-a-day-routines.
- I would provide some pages of steampunk gorgon in each issue, as it's heroine would be the hosting character of the magazine.
- The contributed works can be comics that are already available in the internet, so there are no extra costs and not much work for the contributing artists.
- continuing stories would only have e few pages in each issue.
- I would provide webspace for the download, and each artist contributing would put a link to it on his/her webpage. Of course it would be allowed to contributing artist to offer the pdf on the own page.
- For each story, etc. in the magazine would be a drawing of the host Medusa introducing the comic (with a punchline, etc.) These drawings would be done by the artists themselves or by me or other artist.
- The cover could be done by different artists, but it would use the banner I would provide as jpg.
III. Why sould you contribute?
As this is a noncommercial project (if anyone has an idea how to merchandise it, you're welcome!), you will probably earn no money with it (I don't do either.) You don't have to invest any, too, and you could use a comic you already made, so it isn't that much work. But you could reach an other audience in a fanzine with several different artists. And maybe it is just a lot of fun and you meet nice people.
IV. Who can contribute?
First, there are three rules:
1. Black-and-White art only.
2. No stick-art or manga (or imitated manga).
3. No comics made for children or juveniles. This does not mean they should be pornographic or splatter (which isn't that mature at all), but works that would appeal to mature educated readers.
As for the art: The art hasn't to be perfect at all, and nothing is wrong about simple art. But the art should be authentic, meaning it should not look like a (no matter if good or clumsy) imitation of popular stereotypes as presented by Garfield, Peanuts, etc. Real drawings with less digital effects are prefered.
Story: It could be serials, continuing stories, and there should be a page with stripes of simple gags as well. The stories could be classic adventure, political satire, etc.
Some comics from here I could very well imagine with the concept would be Stupid Snake, black&white features of Catnose and Monster Zero; I haven't asked any of these artist yet and I am sure that there are plenty more, but these were the first that came to my mind.
