Question: If you stop feeding internet trolls, do they really go away?

I've always felt that, like cockroaches, rats, and other vermin, trolls were fairly easy to dispose of individually, but their rate of reproduction and instinct for finding food made it nearly impossible to ever be sure they were gone entirely. Only strict cleanliness and constant vigilance are any real defense (okay, less a defense than a mild preventative).

There will always be more trolls.

Well, no. At least not before they do their 'trollwork'. If they get ignored, they might go away, or (if not) they will go further, with some more hardcore trolling, until they eventually get a reaction. And some don't go away if you ban them... They will make a new account, a new IP and go on with it, even worse than before.

I know of a troll on the TS3 site that cause lots of mayhem and drama. (with death treats and porn stuff) -.- He was 'put to sleep' by a couple of people who managed to track him down and let his parents know about his 'internet activity'.

Ignoring them doesn't solve things; banning them, not always; tracking them down to find out who they are, which in most cases scares them, is (most of the time) effective.

To be fair, there's a percentage who will go away of ignored. Or, as I prefer to do, "Awesome" them until they go away.

Example:

Troll: Ur [creative project] sucks!
Me: AWESOME!
Troll: wut?
Me: AWESOME!
Troll: Ur a loser and should kill yourself!
Me: AWESOME!
Troll: ...

It doesn't work on everyone, but it's surprisingly effective a lot of the time.

Some will go away and some won't. Some of them will leave and move on as soon as they get a reaction, but won't leave until they get that reaction, whilst others will only hang around if they're getting something back from it.

So, yeah, sometimes.

Lol. No pun intended, but that's awesome.

I think it also proves an interesting point. Sure, some lose interest if no one reacts, some stick around until there is a reaction, but very, very few of them have any idea how to handle the wrong reaction.

Which is ironic, since they are thriving on creating content that people don't know how to react to.

Anyway, my opinion, nine times out of ten you should just ignore them. Starve them. Only a few of them are really going to persist until they get a reaction. But the majority of them are just out acting juvenile, and juveniles don't have patience.

On another forum, I've got two trolls to deal with. Banning them isn't really an option, sadly they are adults, and ultimately I'm more inclined to let them make fools of themselves.

I've been working under the philosophy of "engage with reason and let them implode". A small minority of other forum members are occasionally asking us not to feed the trolls, and one person has directly asked me to stop dragging out troll threads to the point where they become unreadably long.

Typically the site gets trolls that rotate through every few months (maybe a 3-5 month cycle) and then burn out. Of these two trolls, #1 is just an obnoxious toddler troll, and #2 is a permatroll which shows no signs of ever going away, despite plenty of incentive.

Mostly, I'm concerned with not disturbing the habitat of the non-troll populace.

If only there was a way that we could point them away to a fake forum where they can all mingle with spam and robots. Should make the problem smaller, or at least be worth a laugh or two.
That's probably not possible but it seems appropriate.

I read on another "phpbb" forum that there is a setting where a troll's comments can be hidden to all users but the troll will still see it's own comments along with everyone else's comments. That way the troll will keep replying and think no one is responding. Twisted Evil

Oddly enough, one of these trolls actually blocks other people. They don't seem to realize that those people can just log out to unblock everything.
