Hello,

Last time I posted on here, I think, was in 2009, when I had just launched my webcomic, Asylum Squad. Well, a lot of new pages have gone up since then, and I've even put out a book and have had some press about it, so... I thought I would post a link to my newer stuff:

http://www.asylumsquad.com/160

Don't bother trying to navigate the archives section - for some reason, every time I upload a new page (which these days has been almost daily!) it takes 12-24 hours for the archives section to work properly again... when it's not working it takes you to the admin login page instead. Weird.

(The stuff that comes before 160 is worth a read, if you don't mind wordy comics coming from a recuperating mind, but 160 on is the good shiat, I think. 160 is the beginning of a proper plot... everything before it is experimental, stream of consciousness kind of stuff.)

Hope you likes - and remember, if you can't say anything nice... it probably means I have more work to do! xD

Silly me, I forgot to add teaser art to this thread:

Yeah... so it's a quasi manga style. I use Letraset for the screentones. Unfortunately, I have a dinky little scanner, so I have to photocopy the pages to get them scanned, because I can never get the halves aligned right when I try to scan pages that are larger than what my scanner can handle. When I get a bigger one, I'm going to rescan everything, as Letraset does not photocopy well (though sometimes the grainy-ness is kind of interesting, depending on the tone).

I welcome any comments/criticisms, of course!

Dumb question: why? Couldn't you just grab GIMP or something and pattern fill it? And it would be cheaper, faster, less cleanup, etc.?

Not that the art suffers for it or anything, I love the look of the comic.

I do have to admit, though, I'm kinda frightened off by clicking the "first" button and drowning in oceans of text text wedged in around tight close ups. The stuff from 160 on seems a lot easier to read, maybe you'd just want to stick the earlier stuff in a separate archive or something?

After 160, though, I thought it was really interesting. The art style seems to fit well with the story, and the atmosphere is really great. Given the subject matter, I was worried at first that it was going to be an attack piece, but it seems fairly well handled so far. Keep it up!

There is no logic as to why I choose Letraset over digital screentones, other than the fact that I like to be able to open up my portfolio and show original art in it that is as close to what's online as possible, and that the less work I have to do in Photoshop, the better (I don't like doing digital art very much). It's an idiotic excuse and I will probably end up switching to digital eventually when I get sick of shelling out for Letraset, but there's a strange satisfaction in doing it the old fashioned way.

As for the old work, it was composed when I was not doing so well, and is a hybrid of comics and zine-style articles. As I recovered from what ailed me, and as I got critical feedback from others, I cut down on the wordiness. People are much more forgiving of it on paper, I find. I have thought about putting it in a separate archive, but am not sure about whether it should be on another site altogether, or in another section. If it's in another section, that is something I don't know how to set up, but it's a good idea.

I'm glad you enjoyed some of it, and I thank you for your feedback. This is not going to be an attack piece - no polemics for me, though they do have their place. I took some excellent writing classes, and I hope that it shows as this new set of comics develops.
