I would like to thank everyone who gave me feedback regarding the matter of redrawing Dissident Priest (Site Contains NSFW and Violence). It meant a lot to me. There was a lot of good feedback and compelling reasons to keep the art as is. Those of you who gave me encouragement on following my heart in this project, were especially appreciated. It is always a very difficult decision when one has to choose between making a sizable investment in making a creative endeavor look the way one has always imagined it looking, or making peace with one is capable of creating alone.
After much consideration and discussion, I decided to change the art to something more pulpy and mainstream comic-style. I know that is not going to sit well with a few people who took the time to go through the site and like the art as is and I apologize for disappointing them. Ultimately, this was a very personal decision. I always pictured Dissident Priest being drawn in a style that I had neither the time or skill set to pull off. I have the funds to make it happen, but there's no guarantee that I will make them back. I am okay with that. I want to stay true to the original vision I had rather than settling with something that will forever feel half-assed.
Anyhow, I hope that my next major announcement on this thread will be a joyful celebration of a finished product that I can feel proud of. For now, I am letting you all now that the comic is going into hiatus until September. I appreciate everyone who supported my graphic novel, as well as everyone who gave me feedback.
I am very fortunate to be part of this community.
Cheers,
Vas

I really like the idea of the pulp fiction style art. Congrats on completing the first chapter! Can't wait to see the second chapter. _________________ |

raines80: Thank you! I really appreciate that. The second chapter won't be online for a while, but it will happen. |

I really like the comic. In particular, I love the whole anti-state theme you have going on here (I tend to dig that kind of stuff).
On a different note, the Vas Littlecrow Wojtanowicz link on your "new readers" page appears to be broken. Also, some of the grey text on the white background is difficult to read. Plus, a lot of the stuff linked through the grey text is pretty cool, so you definitely want to make sure people are clicking on it.
I am really digging this comic and will definitely be coming back for more! Can't wait for Chapter 2!
Keep kicking ass! Nice work! |

MGS:
- I am glad you like the comic. This is one is a labor of love for me. The amount of research I've put into it is insane.
- Fixed the broken link and I added the new staff to the page as well! http://dissidentpriest.com/about/
- Most of my websites use ComicsPress, but this one uses Webcomic so I just used the default CSS. I've corrected that problem and the links should be more obvious.
- Chapter 2 might take longer to appear because today, the person funding (YAY!) the project decided that the trade paperback needs to be longer and that all the art on the webcomic version needs to be expanded, which is fine by me. El Nino has sent me about 10 pages of the art so far, which is great and he might have the entire (and expanded) first chapter ready by the end of next month. That will buy me a ton of time for pre-marketing.
I am ridiculously happy by everything that has happened within the last 24 hours. |

Congratulations on getting someone to fund your graphic novel! I've had quite a few pipe dreams about that in my life, and your success has inspired me to get a few of the scripts I've been working on finished.
And I'm not just excited for you but for comics in general to see that a project like Dissident Priest just got the green light to appear in print. I can't wait to get myself a copy.
Congrats again, and good luck with the project! |

raines80: I am disabled, living in the country and I am unable to drive, so that's a little problematic. Consignments are usually a 50%-50% (if you're lucky) from the cover price. Direct distribution might be a good idea if I can get a friend in the Twin Cities to help me out. I have one person in Seattle with comic book store contact who might be able to get some copies distributed. I will try my best to make it to Fallcon this year and sell some books there. I am also always willing to sell books at a discount to anyone who wants to buy 10 copies or more. Again, it's all about the pre-orders.
The run is going to be a minimum of 50 in black and white -- but more and possibly in color depending on the pre-orders and on whether we have a distributor or not. A good number of those copies will probably go to reviewers and the artists. If we can by some miracle of nature to get Diamond or someone else to distribute the final product, we might be looking at a minimum run of 2500.
This is all really kind of exciting to be honest with you. |

That's badass!
I love the 3-panel row at the bottom. False charges, indeed!
Can't wait to get my copy! Be sure to let us all know when you start taking pre-orders. |

I was definitely a fan of the old art, but, it this poster represents the new direction for the art, then I'm 100% on board with it. I think it will really add a new dimension to the comic, especially as you move into the print medium.
Nice work. Awesome comic! |

I really like the cover art. Is the new chapter going to be that detailed throughout the entire comic? _________________ |

raines80: The hand-painted cover cost quite a bit to get done (even with the extremely generous discount) and it's hand-painted by my friend Lupi. Doing an entire comic that way would've been amazing, but way beyond my price range.
The art on the promo banner below the cover contains art by El Nino. He was kind enough to do the entire graphic novel at an amazing rate that I could afford. He simplified his style from what he normally does to keep costs down, but it still looks amazing.
I will hopefully have more sample art before the end of the month.
MGS: Thanks for the encouragement. |
