I guess this is a milestone, but I didn't even have a store set up... someone e-mailed me out of the blue and said they wanted to use one of my comics on a t-shirt for a b-day present. Of course I said yes, but I needed to set up a store... which I did on Cafe Press (though I haven't linked it to my site yet for reasons I won't go into here). In less than a week the person actually bought it... I'm still surprised... anyway... I have no idea if I'll sell another thing, but I'm at least past the first... I was also surprised how quickly I was able to set up a store... it took minutes...

Yay! That was a pretty good reason to start a store.

I've had best luck selling goodies to people who ask for them. Smart move to open your store.

antleonardi01: True -- especially for the consumer, but it's a good way to experiment with merchandising without any upfront costs. And, you can set your rate if I recall correctly, so you could potentially make some money. I use Zazzle and I make $1 off every $2 postcard I sell, which beats most licensing deals these days.

Yes, Cafe Press has its downsides, but as pointed out above, it does provide a good test market with very low costs and overhead on the seller side. If I happen to sell more I'll likely go with a local printer, but I don't yet have the problem of selling too many shirts at this point. Plus, I don't know how else I could have made the shirt available so quickly... the buyer wanted it ASAP... so it worked out. But I agree I have my reservations.
