Hey everyone

I recently discovered G+ and I'm trying to wrap my head around it. I've heard that while the internet at large hasn't really adopted it yet, creative types are EXPLODING over there like nitro.

How many of you are on G+, and what have your experiences been like?

Are you meeting a lot of peers and readers? Is it easy to share and discover new things? Has it changed how you interact with your audience? Any other thoughts?

And of course, how would you say G+ stacks up against FaceBook, Twitter or other social sites? How does G+ fit into your overall social media mix?

Tell tell tell!

I absolutely love it. It is very artist friendly and has a totally different crowd than Facebook. A lot of people there are Facebook refugees. It doesn't really compete with Twitter as they both have very different functions. There's two major webcomic and cartooning listings. Check it out:

I'm a little suspicious about it... I finally got around to trying to sign up for it last night and found that, surprise surprise, they seemed to want my phone number so they could either send me a voice mail or a text message with my signup code...

A little suspicious about that, to be honest...

That's weird. I was on it during the beta stage and they didn't ask me for that. Then again, they are kind of weird about their whole real name thing.

Hey guys

I signed up a short while ago, and at the time, phone numbers were optional. Are they mandatory now?

And vaslittlecrow, that's a great list that Bearman and MKinyon put together! I'll ask to have myself added to it! Thank you!

Love it, love it, love it. It's like Twitter with less text limit and a fairly decent photo upload system. It's like Facebook without the stupid text limit and the inanity and fifty-bazillion people on Farmville/variants. Not surprised it's exploded with the creative types. It's FOR us, even if they don't know it yet.

gplus.to/tiffanymunro

By all means, add me. It's where I dump pretty much most of my art these days.

I don't use it as much as I'd like, but I enjoy it, and definitely find it's easier to meet new creative types there. Smile

I signed up yesterday and it didn't require a phone number.

Hum but come to think of it I put a phone number into some other Google thing recently (Adsense, I think it was?), so maybe they knew they already had it, I dunno. I did see though a spot to add it in G+, and it wasn't filled in, and I didn't fill it in.

So anyway I think it's probably still optional.

I've been playing around with circles now, and I'm starting to get a vibe on the culture there. I've been noticing several people say something like:

"Hello to all new followers! Introduce yourselves so I know what circles to put you in..." and stuff like that. This sounds like a pretty clever way to:

1) Encourage participation

2) Build relationships

3) Establish appropriate levels of sharing (ie., sharing certain things [like bonus content] with fans only vs. sharing certain things with peers [like tutorials and how-tos, etc.])

I think I'll give this a try!

As I discover more, I'll "SHARE" my findings in this thread!

It seems almost tailored to creative types and the ability to network easily. I'm really digging it so far.

Great to hear everyone is liking G+.

Does anyone know how to delete/remove/hide the SUGGESTIONS from the sidebar? Thanks!

Click "View all" below them, then on the screen showing all the suggested people, click "More Actions v" -> "Select All" on the right, then "Remove."

You can also remove them one-by-one by hovering over them, then clicking the "X" that appears in their upper-right corner.

I don't know of a way to make G+ stop coming up with future suggestions, though.

Hey smbhax

Yep, they just keep coming up with more, more, more suggestions each time you log in.

While it seems impossible to eliminate EVERYONE, it is possible to eliminate certain people so they won't keep popping up every 28 seconds.

Thanks for looking into this!

I worked out how to get onto it, but slow going for now. I'm there though. I have a presence at least, so that's something. Razz

Hey Dutch

It can be slow at the beginning, but vaslittlecrow's links above are a great start to discovering some interesting people and great posts, as well as getting exposed to a decent sampling of the culture. Highly recommended.
