The question for this thread is what period of time is the "Best New Comic" award covering. Should it cover just 2009 or should it go further back into 2008?
There's a discussion thread already here about it
This poll will be open for exactly one week from this post going live, so you don't have to vote now. Think about it, read the old discussion thread and post and read opinions in here. Once your vote is in it cannot be changed. _________________

Some people might want to explain how a comic started in December 2009 should ever be able to win “Best new comic” if only webcomics started one year prior to nominations closing are covered. _________________ |

The only situation I can think of where that would be applicable would be if some well-established comic author/artist ended their current comic and began a new, entirely different comic during December. _________________ |

Maybe a minimum age of up to six months in addition to a maximum of one year plus that minimum age couold help? If a nominee is six months old, there should be enough of it to see if it's good or not. _________________

Actually, now I wish i voted for a longer date...
Like my comic started at the end of July and so is barely established...
It would be unfair for a comic released at a similar date to mine to be pitted against new, but established comics...
Unless I've missed this whole thing completely _________________ |

None of the 19 people that voted for “2009 only” was able to answer my question…
I believe that most of them did not give a second thought to the implications of their vote.
This is why democracy is not always a good idea. _________________ |

Novil, I assumed that the 2010 awards would be structured to allow for those comics that are unluckly with the 2009 awards. |

I think having the category span a calendar year makes it much easier for everyone to remember. A year and change doesn't seem right to me.
If you want to make it fair for everyone, you can expand the definition of "new comic" to two years, like in the Hugos-- an author qualifies for the "New Author" award for two years after their first sale. But I don't really think that's a good idea for a webcomics award, to be honest, because a webcomic can change so much over that kind of time. And we get so many new comics starting up every year this is going to be one of the most overloaded categories as it is.
Yes, a comic started in late December would have a hard time getting attention, but them's the breaks, isn't it? I don't think getting nominated or not for this award is going to hurt a new comic's chances of winning an audience. _________________ |
