Edit: The poll is now open and will close again on the evening of Sunday 9th, one week after this edit.
- Do not include this award
- One Best Character award
- A Best Male Character and Best Female Character award
The option to not include the award will only win if its vote count is higher than the other two combined. In the event that the votes to not include the award are higher than the other two options, but not high enough to outvote the people that want this award to exist in some form, then the next highest option wins.
----------------------------------------------
This thread is just for discussing whether or not there should be a category for Best Character and whether or not this should be one category, multiple to cover main / supporting characters or individual awards for Best Male Character and Best Female Character.
I will open a poll based on the options suggested in this thread on Sunday 2nd August between 9 and 10pm GMT and close it around the same time on Sunday 9th August. _________________

All right, restating from the other thread: Two "Best/Most Interesting/Memorable" awards, one for male and and one female characters. Yes, we'd be adding more categories but it would be a lot of fun to nominate and vote on! Lots of great characters out there. _________________ |

My support for this one (and only one) depends on how many other categories we have. Also, how much does this overlap with "best writing"? |

I’d go for one “Best character” category for the first award. If only D sized manga chicks are nominated, the category could get axed the next time. If really interesting characters are nominated the category could get split into female and male the next time.
I don’t think it overlaps much with “Best writing”. There’s more to an engaging and exciting storyline or extremely clever jokes than just one great character. _________________ |

I should add that I would want voters to take into consideration both character design and character writing (personality? voice?) for this category, not just one or the other.
But I don't think this overlaps with writing. I think this would be a good opportunity for people to vote for a comic that they might otherwise consider a "guilty pleasure". One that may not have the best writing and/or art out there, but they read it because they love the character(s). Or love to hate the character(s). Oh, you know what I mean! _________________ |

The problem with doing best male or female character is, some characters dont necc. have a sex. It should be as generic as possible and simply be "best character" IMO. _________________

I'm just working out the poll options for Sunday.
Unless anyone's got any other suggestions, for this category I'll be putting the following options down
- Do not include this award
- One Best Character award
- A Best Male Character and Best Female Character award
The option to not include the award will only win if its vote count is higher than the other two combined. In the event that the votes to not include the award are higher than the other two options, but not high enough to outvote the people that want this award to exist in some form, then the next highest option wins.
Is everybody happy with this? _________________

I suppose all the ambuguities and fine print (like how to weigh character design vs. character writing) will be resolved along the way?
Anyway, I favor one award, to not discriminate against neutral/transgender/robot characters. _________________

One award.
The skills required to write male and female characters are not different enough to warrent giving seperate awards. It is NOT worth the difficulty of trying to manage another award. |

Anyone who voted two awards like to give their reasons? From the pre-vote discussion it seemed like one award was the clear favourite. |

I can argue the no vote side: I don't think we need a character design award. I think it would fit under either best comic, or most original concept. *shrugs* Maybe I'm dead wrong, . _________________ S*P*Q*R |
