So I realized I haven't been doing much (of anything really) and should put forth some effort and maybe contribute to the success of someone else's project! Somebody who actually deserves it! LET'S LAUNCH TTALLAN INTO AWESOMEVILLE.
I figure everyone here could help! Since she's a webcomic creator, we know she's not wealthy enough to sue!
Step 1 - come up with some whacky idea to promote Galaxion!
Step 2 - post it here and I'll do it OR- do it, then post it here!
Step 3 - hope that thanks to trickle down economics, TTallan will remember us podunks as she's rolling in her gajillion webcomic theoretical internet dollars!

So everyone's seen Galaxion's banner:
Which is super cute, but the demographic is totally impacting the sweeter side of gentle fantasy nerd girls. Like a gundam wing romance.
What we want is the big money. LET'S GET BASEMENT DWELLING MAN CHILD READING THIS.
So I present:
Which is now running until the end of the week from 1-5pm, $5 dollars a day on sites up to a $15 run. More fun come payday! |

We can all pile money together to pay for a two-page ad in a large newspaper. |

I'm up for that! But would putting together money for postcards and sending them to conventions be more efficient? |

STUMBLE GALAXION - I've started stumbling and reviewing Galaxion, three pages a day as to not have it confused for spam. Me and Holly have a lot of friends on our account so hopefully it'll help!

We could have a group wide "cameo a Galaxion character" day, and post links in our archives.
Otherwise, hold the american senate hostage until they agree to a stimulus package for webcomics. _________________ |

I just sent invites to all my stumble upon buddies... all 200 or so of them! The ad is showing on over 250 websites!
Can anyone here color and do prepress? I'll pay to get some postcards made and send them out to freebie booths if someone makes a design for me!
Edit: freebie booths.. booTHS! Not boots!!

I'm game too (for either) Or how about highway-side billboards? I've always wondered what the cost is for those. This seems like an excellent opportunity to find out.
That banner is good, lonelyfetus, but it lacks shiny things. If there's one thing that basement-child men love more than breasts, it's shiny things.
It also lacks sensitivity. Remember that people who live in their parents basement until the age of 45 (and/or gamers, who would like Galaxion because it's about sci-fi and has breasts in it) like to think about themselves, it's this:
"I am only living this way because I am too good for the rest of society."
I cannot count the number of times I've heard people who play D&D all day and then go home and masturbate to internet pornography say "Gamers are so much smarter than normal people." (actually just the 1 time, but hyperbole is more fun)
What you have to do to be effective is give them what they want (breasts) while *pretending* to give them a serious epic which touches on human issues with a broad scope and lets them prove their percieved superiority to their friends and normal people.
e.g.
Friend 1) "lol gaiz did u see the newest penny arcade? It totaly maed me lolol"
Friend 2) "Lol yea man gabe and tycho r awesome"
BASEMENT DWELLING MAN CHILD (BDMC) *scoff scoff* "You guys are so immature. I haven't read Penny Arcade for over a year now, ever since they made fun of (insert game or situation here). Recently I've been reading this comic called Galaxion. It's like Star Trek, only it touches upon issues blablabla"
What has just happened is that BDMC has one-upped his friends. He rises in the social pecking order. BDMC's friends will now also read Galaxion because they want to be cool as well. It is down this road that mad internet fame arrives. (Look at XKCD, for instance. The only reason anybody really reads it is so they can brag about how many of its obscure references they fully understand! Randall also understands BDMC, because he has occasional "human issue" comics which deal with romance, love, and most importantly, SEX.)
So what we need to do is figure out how Galaxion relates to their social situation and flog that for all it's worth.
The easiest way to combine the two in a graphical ad is with graphics of breasts in varying degrees of subtlety and actual text that the average BDMC can pretend to read knowledgeably while he really stares at the chest of a cartoon female.
LICD ran this
Let's also not forget the noble art of the internet name drop and/or comic artist network. Does anybody here know Jeph Jacques? Randall Munroe? RK Milholland? Jeffrey Rowland? If so, our goal is already accomplished. One simple aside or even a direct reference to Galaxion, and it will be swelled with loyal readers who will automatically think the comic is 10 times more awesome than it actually is (And I don't mean that in an insulting way, because Galaxion is great. But If it's mentioned by one of the big-names, their fans automatically put it on the "this is the best thing ever" list.)
I've spent far too much time writing this, so I'll stop for now. |

Firstly, I want to say a lot of people are replying from my stumbles with thanks, and saying they love the comic. One (who I don't think has anything to do with these forums) Already reads it!

Great idea! What about us who don't have running webcomics? I guess I can make a webcomic so that I could..
What would be the best day to start an event like that, and have it run? The butternutsquash guy did that as well, and invited people through myspace -- should we try a myspace/facebook run next week?

INSANELY expensive. They're perfect for medium size businesses right off the freeway, but I can't imagine it being any less than 1k/mo.
I ran a multimedia advertisement for the ISP I used to work for - on of those ONSCREEN ad things you see in movie theaters. It was only a single local theater with 4 screens, the thing was $3k/YEAR!!

You're right! I'll try to remake an ad to be prettier when I'm not so burned out by the internet. Right now I'm running a real galaxian ad and see how that compares to the b/w one I made. See if I can pull in more with less.
I also redid the target audience, before I had it open to all websites, but really -- I don't think sites on gardening and home loans will click on my busty fan banner.
THE PITCH: A banner from the bust up of a Galaxian character, with a starry sky overhead.
GALAXION - Steps to better understanding the finer sex. IN SPACE.
I think if we can coax TTallan to try Topatoco, we'd hear a success story in that. By being affiliated with the others listed there and on Brunetto T-Shirts, the comic'll be validated by association and resolve merchandise issues mentioned in the other thread.
So the question is: WHAT KIND OF T-SHIRT WOULD WE WANT TO SEE FROM GALAXIONCOMIC.COM ?
Also: Would TTallan need help financing an initial order? |

Er... ah...
I don't even know if I should be involving myself in this scheme or if I should just step back humbly and keep out of the way! You crazy kids!! (The introvert part of me wants to stick my head in the sand, but, d'awww, I feel wuved...!)

Those are some big names over there. It's not a matter of convincing me so much as convincing them! But... I still want to have a book printed first. _________________

(is laughing)
(seriously)
Personally, I'm more inclined to read Galaxion because of the classy, not sexy banner... fortunately I already have it bookmarked, so you won't turn me off. Between Places ALWAYS has room for cameos. Except I've filled up my current scene with cameos from Sunset Grill, Sex Percussions, Epic Fail and Cetyia... and my next scripted sequence is between two characters in Rease's room, which always has room for cameos on her walls, as long as people supply me art and give me permission to stick it up as a poster/whatever. I CAN add a "Galaxion" book on the floor in that scene, but it's better if ttallan gives me a poster that I can make into a book and put on the floor to fit the trending. Otherwise I don't think I'd be able to line up a cameo for cameo day, just due to the set script of my scenes. If ttallan gives me permission to cameo a character, though (and a reference!), it will happen. I'm cameo happy. It's like trigger happy, but with other people's characters.
Seriously. Anyone can get me to cameo them. I'd rather draw cameos than NPCs. (And I'd rather "steal" art than draw posters)
We should all team up as webcomic creators and write "read Galaxion" somewhere in our comics on one update day. Whether this is just snuck onto the bottom... look, some people read tons of comics! Let's get the message through to them that they should be reading this one too! Subliminal messaging! Got a newspaper in your comic? A board? Put Galaxion on it! Spread it across the internet. Let's make it a meme! "This thread needs more SCI-FI BABES!" _________________ |
