UPDATED FEB 28th 2009:

List of Eligible Nominations:
http://webcomicbeacon.com/beakys/first/

__________________________________________

This is a work in progress with a Deadline of at the end of March 2009.

This is not a voting thing... this is SUPPOSED to be a simple thing that the hosts as "judges". (plus possibly a couple others)... Basically it's us giving webcomics that we feel should be noticed. Nothing extravagant.

Basically, we need people to nominate webcomics that fit the guidelines. I have comprised a list at the bottom of ones I recal, AND of ones that were submitted.

Also, feedback in general will be appreciated!

Possible Awards

Of The Webcomic Beacon Webcomic Awards, there are a few categories.
The number of awards given of each are listed next to the listed award.

*NOTE* I don't really want to have more than these 4 categories.... Even the Listener's Choice may not work if we don't get a whole lot of them.
Even the Ugly Duckling Award will be difficult to award... I can't really think of any off the top of my head. I want to keep it simple as possible... which is why each main category can have more than one award to be given out.

The Newbie Beacy Award (2-4)
Handed out to outstanding new webcomics.
(Beginning between November 2007 - December 2008)

Standalone Complex Award (1-3)
Handed out to new short story form webcomics.
(Beginning between November 2007 - December 2008, and end before February 2009)

Ugly Duckling Award (1-2)
Handed out to an outstandingly improved webcomic
(Comparing back to between November 2006 - December 2007)

Listeners Choice Award (1)
This refers to the submissions we receive from our Listeners. (not a vote)
The most nominated webcomic we receive during our Nomination process, will win this award.

Eligibility for 2008 Awards:

(1a) Must have STARTED between November 2007 and December 2008.
Exception: Excludes considerations for "Ugly Duckling Award", which goes back only one additional year.

(2a) Must still be updating, or properly ended.
(2b) Must not be on an extended or indefinite hiatus, nor should have an abrupt ending (abandoned).

(3a) Must be a NEW comic. Not a Restarted/Relaunched comic.
(3b) Spin-offs and Side Comic to a parent comic should work just fine.

(4) Print comics repackaged for online, only count if the print was created within the time frame.

(5) Must be entirely free-to-read online.

Ineligibility for 2008 Awards:

(1) Any Webcomic that won a A Webcomic Beacon Webcomic Award the previous year.

(2) Abandoned or indefinitely hiatused webcomics.

(3) Any part of the past or current storyline requires purchase.

Considerations by Judges:

(1) Consider Updates that run THROUGH February 2009, especially for webcomics that started late in the year.

(2) Small Hiatuses should be acceptable, however, update schedule is important.

(3) Winners should be picked based on a consensus, if possible.

Nominations

Nominations begin February 2009.

All Nominations must follow guidelines for eligibility.

If The Webcomic Beacon doesn't know about a new webcomic, we can't judge it.

These are the Nominations. People have until March 15th to inform us of missed, new webcomics.

Current Nominationees

Submitted AND ones I noted:

Gastrophobia
Evil Diva
Bear Nuts
House Pets
Sister Claire: Pregnant Nun, Holy Crap!
Curvy
Night Zero
Nerf Now
Lowly Dregs
Apathy Adventures
All Manner of Bad
Trying Human
Surfboards and Rayguns
The Magic of Wonder
ETI-PI
Road Crew
The Artiste Manquée

I'll have to look through my bookmarks. Nothing's coming to mind at the moment - I think all of the comics I read have been around for a bit too long. And I know my comic's not eligible, for a few reasons. Laughing

From my bookmarks:

Sandra and Woo & Whubble
Ink Tank

As for myself, I'm not sure if I'm eligable. I was sort of dabbling in the single panel thing in 2005 & 2006, but those sites were dead and buried when my current dabble came along.

This sounds like fun. A webcomic awards that doesn't involve xkcd or Penny Arcade sounds refreshing (not that they're bad comics, but common, we all know they're good by now).

If you're looking for newer comics, here's the list of nominees for Frumph.net's New Comic category in their Webcomic Readers Choice Awards:

http://wcrca.frumph.net/NEWEST/

Lots of good ones here.

Marsona's Story started in June of '08, though we tend to have random gaps in our update schedule. Oops? Still going at the moment, though.

edit reason: Blargh, too much coding. HTML doesn't work here Sad

I really like the idea of a sort of a "fresh" comic award, especially with its focus on free-to-read online, on non-hiatus state and the fact that work considered's gotta be NEW/newish...
Your categories look absolutely reasonable (the Ugly Duckling is a nice one but U R right: 'tis gonna be a helluva job deciding what comic has improved most with respect to artwork, plot, or script etc...)

Same here, I'm afraid...Nevertheless, it's gonna be nice to see an award list not including the usual predictable winners...

I'm very interested in submitting my own webcomic, Wayward Fall... Started it December 2008, so just within the guidelines!! Haha.. Laughing

I hope that's okay, to nominate myself. Embarassed I feel a little conceited doing that. But this seems like a lot of fun, and I'd rather not miss out if I can help it. Razz lol!

Thanks in advance.. <3 =)

How about Crowbar http://www.crowbarwebcomic.webs.com/?
Or Night Zero http://nightzero.com/?

Not completely sure when Night Zero started but I think it was 2008....

My comics Spying with Lana and Outrageous Fortune both started in 2008 as well, so I suppose I'll throw my figurative hat into the ring as it were.

Darn my webcomic just missed out according to your criteria, it started on January 4 2009 and might not be eligible for next year as I intend to be extended hiatus from July 2009 when Season 1 is over.

Anyway here is the link if you are interested.

Here's one that didn't get mentioned on the Frumph awards, but is still worth mentioning because the concept is so unique:
