I have no art experience and I can't afford all those fancy graphics programs, so I make due with what I have.



Pottyland is not meant to shock or offend. I'm not entirely sure what Pottyland's purpose is. It is just something fun for me to do.

Okay, I'm a person who doesn't have a problem with pixel art and using MSPaint. So, I can actually be forgiving of that kind of art--and can find it enjoyable as a medium into itself. But, the art in this strip is choppy even for MS Paint. Just because you can't draw doesn't mean you can't take your time to make something look good using the tools the program has. Also, there are many other free programs out there that can allow you to do the same thing using beziers and other tools that would help your art.

The font you use for the headings and navigation is a pixel font that is supposed to be used for small lettering. It is hard to read because it is used improperly. You want people to take this strip seriously, yet you are not making the small effort to make the site attractive to visitors. If you want a pixelated header font for effect, there are many free ones available on the 'net. But, again, my feeling is that you don't really care, and if that is the case your potential readers are going to realize that and not bother with your strip.

All of that said...

Getting to the content. I think your own words say it best...the people are doing NASTY things. It's a gross-out. Gross out gets old VERY fast. People argue about the right to use profanity, but if you have a strip that is nothing but a succession of f-bombs, people are not going to come back. Thus, strip after strip of yuck wears you out. I didn't laugh at any of the jokes. Though, I could see where a person would find one or two mildly amusing. Still, how many times can you do a joke about poop and make it entertaining?

Potty humor in itself is not funny. If you watch movies that are heavy with potty-humor, you will see there is some effort to put a story around it. A guy sitting on the toilet is not funny--it's just a guy sitting on the toilet. A guy "creating" his own toothpaste is not funny, it's just ick.

Honestly, if I had to put my money on it, I don't think you so much find the strips themselves funny, but the reaction/expressions/revolt they create in other people. You are here for the shock value. You are being offensive for no other reason to upset people and/or piss them off. Not a good way to gain a large audience.

Also, I should mention it's really not cool to write a comic that is admittedly nasty and gross, ask for critique, and then get upset when people agree with you and don't herald your comic genius. Comedy is NOT easy. It actually takes work to make something funny. In your case, it's clear that not a lot of work or thought was put into it, drawing-wise or writing-wise.

Agreed - it's not funny. It's not. Not. Not funny.

It's not potty humor, it's just potty. You would have to be no more than 3 years old to find this funny, but it wouldn't even be funny then, and you spoiled it already, anyway, since it isn't for children.

So there doesn't seem to be any target audience. If it's there to shock, good luck. I don't find it shocking. And the only thing it offends is the reader's intellect.

I'm sad to see that no one here seems to like my stuff. People I've talked to elsewhere like it, so I don't know. Maybe it's just not mature enough for you guys.

I'm aware the art isn't the best in the world. But I haven't taken an art class since middle school, so what you're seeing is pretty much the pinnacle of my artistic abilities. Using a different program to make it wouldn't help much, if at all.

I am not trying to offend or shock anyone with my work. Really. I just like drawing people in funny situations, usually involving pee or poo. You guys can hate it if you want but I'm just drawing it for myself mainly (and anyone else who is willing to tolerate it). After all, they say you should write about (or in this case, draw about) what you know. Well I use the restroom a lot (medical condition) so...

The font on the site is kind of an inside joke because it's the same font and colors I use for my AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) account. Oddly no one else has said it's hard to read. Maybe you all need glasses? Just joking. I can see how it might be a little hard to read.

And like I keep saying, it's not the gross-out factor I'm going for. It's the sheer absurdity of some of the situations. A guy happily eating shit out of the toilet. Another guy pissing on a tree like a dog. Imagine if you saw that in real life. Wouldn't that be kind of silly?

Sure it would be a little odd to see that in real life. But your drawings are not conveying a sense of realism to that end, and thus the message of "wouldn't this be funny if it really happened?" gets completely lost. If the images were painted or otherwise conveyed in a realistic manner, then the guy peeing on the tree like a dog might actually be funnier. However, I don't need to see realistic renderings of people eating their own shit. Poorly-drawn images of such is de-appetizing enough.

The problem with this kind of humor as well is, it might be funny once. Twice is pushing it. After fifty times, it's just completely lost all sense of humor and is now descending into weird fetish territory. Imagine being in a room with a few friends, in complete silence. Then someone says "ratfart." It'd be pretty funny, in that classic sophomoric sense and everyone would probably bust out laughing. Now imagine everyone repeating it a hundred times. It loses its sense of comedy through constant repetition, and anyone still laughing at the end of that sequence is just kind of sad, because everyone else has stopped laughing a long time ago.

And the constant theme of racism - not funny by a long shot. That's there purely to offend people and provide a shock value - there's just no other conceivable reason for it at all. It might be funny if you showed the perpetrator of such racism as being the ultimate butt of the joke, but that doesn't happen. Instead you're just saying "lol, black people are stupid" (and probably giggling because I said "butt"). This conveys to the average viewer that you are probably very racist in real life, and thus puts readers off (that is if they're even sticking around in the first place) unless they're hardcore KKK members. And is that the kind of audience you want? Bottom line: racism is simply not funny.

Is this like a new genre of comic? Shitty art and vile jokes? This stuff isn't even juvenile, it's just stupid. I don't think I would have laughed if I was 15. I don't really even know what to say after looking through them all. I'm not shocked, but i really wonder what kind of person you are.
