And if you ever wondered about the mechanics of a steam-bike, just look up at steampunk-gorgon.


(Yes, I know that the chopper-design isn't very authentic for the 1930ies, but this bike was built by a crazy mechanic who loves outstanding design and so he invented the look ahead of it's time. I just can't stand that steampunk-bikes anymore that look like 21.century offroad-bicycles with medival wooden wheels and an engine that isn't much more then a brass-pipe omitting thick black smoke although you don't see the fireman throwing in wooden logs from the passenger seat.)

By the way, I looked up your pictures in the web and was quite astonished to find a pleasant lady. Strangeley I always thought that Rasputin Barxotka was a kind of (willfully exaggerated) alter ego.

I am welding my cars for three days know, and there are still more holes in it then you need to fill the Albert hall, so I couldn't do much drawing. But tonight I finally managed to finish page 50 as I could not sleep. So, four more pages today.

And a few words about the strange wagernian fantasy-viking-germans on these pages.
In the 19th century people imagined the ancient germans as simple, but honest, tough guys with huge beards wearing funny horned helmets and fur-clothes, drinking beer all day. This unhistoric cliché got mixed up with the image of vikings, so that they can hardly been told apart today. But, all in all, a much more pleasant picture then that invented by the nazis, who turned the the ancient germans into a kind of spartan warriors, living only for war.
The later, serious research proved both pictures to be wrong, but the 19th century wagnerian ancient germans merged with the viking myth into the generic fantasy-barbarians that are still popular today. The folks of the Freyja-Farm in the comic are not historical germans, but post-industrial people defining their own ways, and of course it is a spoof of fantasy-cliches.

I'm in favor of hand-drawn stuff. I once had a brief encounter with an old underground comic called Moondog (not the musician, but about a post-apocalypse where everybody had to drive trains around in the desert) that this reminds me a little bit of.

I like the fake newspaper in the beginning. It's a fun way to get exposition in, while making the universe feel more 'real'.

Thank you very much! Moondog (1969) by George Metzger is indeed one of the comics that I owe a lot. I read it first more then 20 years ago, and it influenced me a lot, I think. As far as I know, Moondog is the very first real steampunk, even before the genre was named. And I never cared much for the later stuff. (Although I really like Captain Moosestash who reminds me of Yosemite Sam) But I could never get into that Manga-Steampunk.

Edit: Now I recall that Metzger once stated that the comic was indeed named after the avantgarde musician that actually moved to germany in his old age. (The land of the magic river Rhine, as he said. He wasn't really dressed up as viking, as often wrote, but it was his idealized vision of Odin.)
