Not so long ago, a fellow by the name of jdalton (he may have been a frog, I was never clear on that) started a thread here in General Ramblings that he called Character Chat. It was designed as a place where characters could get about and meet other characters without their "authors" sticking their noses into any business they didn't need to. It was a very useful thread, because it gave "authors" the opportunity to practice speaking and thinking invarious characters' voices. More importantly, it was a place where lots of people paid attention to me, which I like.

So...err...I guess in the spirit of the original, I should ask some questions to get this thing started, and everyone else should add more questions and ... err... things.

Where are you from?
Do you have any family?
What's your favorite flavor of frosting?
If--for purely noble but hypothetical reasons--you hd to hide a body, how would you do it?
What's your favorite cocktail?

This sounds like a great idea, unfortunately I suffer from author/character personality separation issues (yep, fight club) so it'd just be me posting normally.

But while I'm here, Petal Oak, if you were stuck on an island and could only take one fruit, one animal and one hobby activity, what would they be?

(Okay, I'll bite...)

Teri Holland wrote:
Kia Ora! I'm pleased to meet you mates. So, a little Q and A, eh? Well, so long as the answers aren't classified, I'm game.

Where are you from?
Well, I was born and raised in Tauranga, New Zealand, and I still think of that as home. Currently? I've got a flat in New Victoria, British Columbia, which is where I stay whenever I'm Earthside.

Do you have any family?
Two parents, and a younger brother. My dad's a major-general in the Peacekeepers, though he's been talking of retiring lately. Mom's a sculptor. Oh, and I've got a brother - studying to be an Anglican minister, if you can believe it. Well, religion's his thing, not mine. (grins) Keeps him out of mischief.

Don't have a spouse or kids myself, and the way my life's going, I doubt I'll have the time for that for a while yet! Not that I wouldn't like to have kids someday... Oh well.

What's your favorite flavor of frosting?
Oi, that's a change of pace! Well... always liked vanilla as a kid, but since my Academy days I developed a craving for maple treats. So I'd have to say maple frosting be'd my favorite for now.

If--for purely noble but hypothetical reasons--you hd to hide a body, how would you do it?
(long silence)
Hypothetical. Right.

Strictly speaking, I don't find anything noble about hiding a body. That usually implies one had to kill the bloke, and that's about as far from noble as you can get, in my book. I'd can't think of any situation where I'd need to kill someone and then hide the body later. Well... I suppose if some hostile force had overrun the place or spacecraft where I'm posted and I needed to avoid detection... but really, most Exoguard facilities are pretty secure. No group would ever get that far in the first place. Besides, we're not issued lethal weapons. Stunners work just fine, thank you.

So, I suppose my answer to your question is... I wouldn't. If I did kill someone, I'd rather be caught.

Well, this is getting morbid. Moving on!

What's your favorite cocktail?

Honestly, I never got a taste for alcohol. Can't stand the stuff. So, no favorites.

Right! My turn, I guess. Petal, do you mind if I ask about your ears? I have to say I've never seen anything quite like them before. Are they a cosmetic alteration or are they, um, natural?

It always comes back to the ears, doesn't it? It's never, "Oh, Petal Oak, you have beautiful eyes!" or, "Wow, those gold accents in your hair are fabulous!" No, it's always, "So what's up with those ears?"

So, um...okay. Short answer: I'm a fairy, so of course they're natural.
Long answer: The world and everything in it is a lot more subject to human expectations than most people think.

Okay...more questions...Sock puppet...dog...err...thing. What does a movie about closeted gay men have to do with whether or not you can answer a few simple questions and engage in polite conversation?

Other Fellow: Why no piccy? Do you not have a stable form or are you so hideous that no camera is able to capture your soul-crushing ugly without exploding?

Oi, there's no need for insults, Petal! Wait... you mean you can't see me?

Of all the... my camera's not streaming properly. Just a second... there. She'll be right.

I suppose I touched a nerve with the question about the ears. Sorry about that. In my defense, I've never seen a fairy before.

So, where are you from?

Frosting? If you mean the sauce bags they hand out at alien colonies to make human food taste decent? Then barbeque 'frosting' I guess haha. If you mean cake? Uh, I guess chocolate, I don't eat much of that stuff, not usually something I can go for ya know?. You look like a strawberry kinda of girl...hm.

If I had to hide a body? Well that's the easiest question you've asked all day, the airlock! Only problem is if the corpse floats by a wind-...wait...

Oh crap aren't I breaking some kinda underdeveloped species protection act talking to you. Er, wait how ARE we talking?? Maybe we should forget I said anything!

OOC: This is an interesting idea, I'm game.

Ah, Petal Oak, you're back. I fear I still haven't found any reason to turn anyone into a hat.

As I believe I mentioned before I am from the planet Temomon.
I don't think I have a favorite frosting. I prefer salty snacks to sweet ones.
I have a daughter. I hope I still have a mother -- I haven't been able to see her for a very long time.

As for bodies, we talk a lot about throwing people out of the airlock, but as Neige A has figured out, it creates a very disconcerting kind of space debris if we actually leave them out there. So we usually incinerate corpses.

I am having trouble imagining why I would want to hide a body, though. And even if I did want to, I probably couldn't. The medical sensors know immediately when I've killed someone, and track the location of the remains. Bodies become a health hazard if left lying about too long.

Neige A, if breaking the rules bothers you, you may wish to avoid conversing with me, as well. I'm wanted for High Treason, by every planet that has joined the Galactic Legal Alliance.

Now some questions for everyone:
What part of your job do you enjoy the most?
How would you describe your own personality?
And since I have already revealed myself as a wanted man, perhaps it would not be unfair to ask... What is the worst crime you have ever been accused of?

Where are you from? Earth. A place called Switzerland. You probably won't have heard of it.
Do you have any family? Oh, good heavens, yes-- a sister and three brothers and my folks of course, plus the usual assortment of aunts and uncles and cousins and so on. I don't get to see them much, unfortunately, because my job keeps me rather far from home.
What's your favorite flavor of frosting? Chocolate! But if it's just that synthetic crap... well, I'll probably eat it anyway, but I'll complain loudly about it not being as good as homemade chocolate frosting.
If--for purely noble but hypothetical reasons--you hd to hide a body, how would you do it? Hide a body? On a spaceship? That's just crazy talk. You can't hide a body on a spaceship unless you dress it up like one of the techs and sat it in a chair and hope nobody notices. Ask me to dispose of a body, now that's a different story. The right enzymes, a little fiddling with the ship's sewage records... of course, you'd still get caught the minute someone thinks of doing a biological scan, so don't even think about trying it on my ship.
What's your favorite cocktail? Hm, well, as long as I'm indulging, just spike my hot cocoa and I'll be smiling.

Bonus questions:
What part of your job do you enjoy the most? I love any assignment that is far enough out from Earth that my Terran Space Administration bosses can't try to micromanage me.
How would you describe your own personality? Assertive. I have that on good authority.
What is the worst crime you have ever been accused of? Accused of? That would be... trespassing. Any other stuff you may have heard is just rumors.

And here's my contribution to the list:
Who or what gives you the most grief?

Nice to meet you, mates.

I admit my knowledge of the law is a little sketchy at points, but I've never heard of the Galactic Legal Alliance nor of an underdeveloped species protection act, so I think I'm safe talking to both you, Niege, and you, Moracey. That said, I don't think I'll pry into that statement about "High Treason."

Moracey, I do hope you will see your mother again. I love my parents to bits and I don't know what I'd do if I lose them.

Anyway! Questions:

What part of your job do you enjoy the most? That's a tough one. I'm both a pilot and an EVA specialist, and both jobs have their joys. I think if I had to choose just one thing, it'd be standing on a new world for the first time. I've done it once so far. Such an eerie feeling... but a good eerie, if you catch my drift.

How would you describe your own personality? Friendly, mostly, and focused, very focused. You certainly don't land a slot on a deep survey craft without a certain amount of drive. Dyson sometimes says I'm firey too, but I think that's just because of that one time I was in a fight. And, speaking of fights...

What is the worst crime you have ever been accused of?
(Embarrassed pause)
Conduct unbecoming an officer.
Look, in fairness I was provoked. I and my mates were just celebrating our graduation. We'd all made Space Officer, thrilled as anything, speculating on where we'd all be posted, when some pub-crawling Marines came in. Words were exchanged, then one of them tried to deck me, and... well...

In addition to the time we needed to recover from our injuries our C.O. grounded us for a week. Since then I've walked the straight and narrow as best as I can.

Who or what gives you the most grief? Newsbloggers, without question. Especially ones that have an axe to grind about the Exoguard or off-Earth colonies. If they're so bloody nearsighted they can't see the value of what we're doing... I'd dump them all into the middle of Victoria Crater lake if it'd knock some sense into them.

So, my question to you lot:
What's the farthest you've been from home? Me, I'm sending this stream from high Saturn orbit, 10.1 AU from Earth, or 1.5 billion kilometers if you like. That's my farthest... so far.

@Moracey: I remember you. You're the one with the bloodthirsty sister...or girlfriend...or haberdasher...I was never entirely clear on that. How is she?

@Cutegirl #702856: Where am I from? Ireland, originally. A bilberry bog near Lough Ree in County Roscommon to be precise, but that was hundreds of years ago. Since then, I've lived all over the world. Except Uruguay. I hate Uruguay. They know why.

It's interesting that you're all from outer space, even anime-angel-boy (I would have assumed he would be from the part of Japan where they keep all the white people they use in cartoons).

Okay, so questions...
What part of your job do you enjoy the most? I don't have a job. So...um...all of it.

How would you describe your own personality?" I am the soul of deference and courtesy. Really, I'm very shy and almost never speak out of turn.

What is the worst crime of which you have been accused? I have never been convicted of a felony.

Who or what gives you the most grief? I assume by "grief" you mean annoyance, and not "crushing sense of loss", in which case it would have to be my sort-of-husband, Conal. He's a big dumb mick and is always going on about how much things cost.

What's the fartjest you've been from home? I was in Japan during the 16th century, so I guess there.

Okay maybe our time lines don't sync up to the galactic standard but 16th century? Now I feel like I'm breaking more laws already, as if the military needed more reason to hound me.

There's galactic laws here that basically forbid us from interacting with planets that aren't space faring. Funny it's a law but you don't see Earth complaining with that lovely crappy FTL they bought all those years ago that brought them here.

You can forget your silly little alternate society laws about who's grown up enough for what information. For one thing, the year as I'm typing is 2012, and Earth has plenty of space thingies (although probably fewer since the Americans' shuttle program died of old age and they pissed away all their chances to update it).

For another, information is organic, and will naturally escape to new places, like water. For instance, we have a whole treaty organization based on the idea that only the right people should know anything about atomic stuff, and that is currently working about as well as carrying water in a cheese cloth.

Anyway, I doubt that my reality has any bearing on your reality, so your people's made up laws to govern the ungovernable probably don't count.
