Well I just finished and ordered my new book for Seattle's Emerald City Comic Con and now trying to figure out what other items I'm going to have to put onto my countdown list.
Anybody else coming?
If so come and meet me in artist alley, table N-11 _________________ |

Too expensive for me, though it looks like they'll have an awesome guest lineup. _________________ |

The wife and I shall be there at Artist's Alley P-24. Not only our first ECCC outing but our first out-of-state convention. And I'm desperately hoping there's some market in walking distance where we can buy food for the weekend at a cheaper rate than the Center or nearby restaurants will offer...
Also probably going to have to adapt to the whole 'dressing in layers' concept, since last time I visited Seattle I discovered my SoCal concept of cold weather gear is sadly lacking in the face of near-freezing temperatures. _________________ |

I can't think of a market right near the convention center, it's pretty much right in a very downtowny skyscraper and freeway spot. There's a supermarket directly up the hill about a mile, going east, and there's the Pike Place Market, but again that's probably something like a mile away, only north-westish. Hm there's also a small market to the north, but also kind of in that inconvenient mile distance. There could very well be something closer though as I'm not intimately familiar with that whole area.
It's been annoyingly cool here--getting down to the mid-30's or so--but the forecast for the convention weekend is more in the 50/40 (F) high/low range, which shouldn't be too bad. _________________ |

Regrettably nothing is really cheap in the downtown area. Nearly everything within a mile of the Convention Center is designed to gauge tourists and yuppies. I think the supermarket that smbhax is talking about is the QFC on Broadway. Which is a pretty doable walk but too far for a lunch run. Personally I usually pack a lunch for these things. If you want any help feel free to contact me through my strip's contact links. _________________ |

I checked with our hotel today and, huzzah, they had cheap mini-fridge rentals available... so between that and our collapsible cooler if we can get one good store run in when we arrive on Thursday I think we'll be okay for the weekend. Bonus is so far the forecast I looked at has Thursday being free of rain, hopefully that doesn't change.
Also when you guys say "up the hill"... how steep are we talking? _________________ |

Not too steep; it's reasonably gradual by Seattle terms, but you will feel it if you walk it since it's eh pretty long!
And yep Montanto, the QFC at Broadway and eh--is that Pike or Pine?--is the one up there that I was thinking of.
EDIT: Aha, Google found a bunch of closer options--even the Pike Place Market is closer, and doesn't involve as much elevation change, either:

I always figured the waterfront around Pike's Place market would be somewhere for us to avoid since it's such a tourist destination, but I'm seeing some testimonials that locals do grocery shopping there, too. True?
I did look up supermarkets on google already but as you can see from the results, the definition of "supermarket" is pretty loose and seems to include places like Sonoma-Williams which I don't think sell food at all. It also looks like I should stay away from places like Kress IGA since they seem more like expensive organic delis than someplace you go to buy Coke, bread, and packs of cheap, nicely preservative-infused lunchmeat. _________________ |

Both. The Pike Place Market is a great place for fresh produce and specialty items and I really enjoy shopping there when I have a cool recipe. Having said that, unless you're there to take pictures and watch flying fish, It is to be avoided during the tourist season.
As far as the supermarket issue the main reason I recommended the QFC is it's the closest big market outside of the downtown pricing bubble (that IGA on 3rd is exactly what I meant by places designed to gauge yuppies) The other one I would recommend is Uwajimaya in the International District. It may not look close on Google Maps, but it's right next to the bus tunnel so you can get to it really quickly. _________________ |

Man I almost forgot that is THIS weekend. Crap.
Pike Place is more like 5 blocks away, but unless you are on the paleo diet and want raw seafood and chukar cherries, thats not the best place to shop. There is an IGA grocery store right downtown though. It's kinda cool, it's like underground and you walk down an escalator to get to it. And it's mostly just normal groceries, not fancy stuff. Bartells drug stores usually are pretty well stocked too.
Have fun, enjoy our fair city, and maybe I will see you there!!
*edit*
Either way, you should check out Pike Place. Its the "heart" of Seattle, or so they say. Also, the city is extremely walkable, we have big hills, but they are going from the waterfront up, i.e. 1st to 3rd Ave. Walking laterally isn't too bad.
And bring a rain coat! Do they even sell those in LA? _________________ http://calmblueoceans.com/ |

Alas, our walkability quotient has now suffered a hit due to Dawn having sprained her ankle. Fortunately we have at least two friends offering car service to the supermarket. Unfortunately, doing long walkabouts for tourist purposes is now going to be, as Mordin Solus would say, "problematic". _________________ |
