That's a trade secret known only to Ash and one other persn (legend has it that it is passed down the Norwegian royal line on each monarchs deathbed, but that may just be a dream I once had). Some people have reverse engineered parts of it, however, and they believe it has something to do with update frequency and number of times the comic is accessed through this site. The phases of the moon may be involved, and possibly something about the Guyana cocoa harvest.

Ash uses some unnecessarily complicated algorithm that is so obserdly complicated it would make Stephen Hawking stand up and say, "Wow, that is obserdly complicated."

I can say he uses the daily views, the update times and the number of people who have favorited the comic as variables.

That and the moon phases are totally used. God help you if you update on the eve of a waxing moon.

I have a feeling it also counts how many references to obscure 80s sit coms there are in the comic, whether the nonexistant god Thor (I'm an Athorist) likes the comic or not, and the historical accuracy of the comic from the point of view of future archaeologists from a parallel dimension. Also I heard a rumour that the number of people who "favourite" the comic has some sort of influence, but who believes that kind of nonsense, right?

I had Thor in my comic once, that explains the spike I had a few months ago!
