Murphy's law: as soon as you install anti-virus software, you get infected. I need to reformat my laptop but I can't through My Computer, and it asks me for a name or something when trying to accomplish the same task in DOS. I have my Toshiba Recovery Disks but I have no idea what to do with them...

My computer is completely useless. No .exe files can be opened. None.

Can anyone help me?

Yikes! Well, a Google search came up with a couple answers from Microsoft in the first few hits that may help.

If you can get .exe's running, a very thorough malware elimination routine that cured me from an annoying rootkit recently is listed here

(In my case, the part that found and eliminated the rootkit was specifically using Kaspersky's TDSSKiller utility as detailed in this subsection early in the procedure.)

For future reference:

- disconnect your computer from the Net
- get a boot CD, preferably one that has a bunch of anti-malware and anti-virus tools on it (like the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows)
- boot off the CD so you're not starting any of the beasties currently living on your computer
- run whatever tools are most likely to fix the problem
- ???
