I like the idea of one award that encompasses all those things Wendy lists. The name of the award doesn't have to competely define it. It could be "The Innovation Award" and then you could use a paragraph such as "this award is to celebrate those who have made radical innovations in online comics in 2009, such as new concepts in art, writing, reader engagement and uses of the medium"
I think this award would be good idea, but it should be not only aimed towards innovative concepts, but also towards non-traditional media (photocomics, 3D, ...).
On Sunday when I open the polls it looks like the options are going to be:
- Don't include this category
- The Innovation Award
- Most Innovative Evolution in Webcomics
- Best Use of the Medium
For the first option to win it would need to have more votes than the other three combined as votes for the inclusion of the award will be split between these options.
Does anyone have any other name suggestions they want included? The cut off point for names is between 9 and 10 UK time Sunday.

Most Innovative Evolution in Webcomics?
Might that be a better way to put it? That way it would go to someone that's doing something game changing in webcomics?
Example Nominees could be people like Midtoon that has a choose your own adventure plot device. Or Tweetics, who crafts comics from individual twitter messages he receives. Or people doing neat things with still photos and comic effects like was talked about previous in this thread.

3D art and photocomics are more a practical or artistic choice than an innovation; maybe five or ten years ago such things could be called innovative, but not any more. I imagined the innovation award (or whatever it ends up being called) would be more about doing things in a new way, whether that's the comic layout, use of dialogue, site design or interactivity, etc.
Generally, I'm pretty much on the fence with this award, though. I'm not entirely sure we'd get that many nominations for it, but I still like the idea of it.

I like the "Innovation" idea as a category. I'm not sure that Photocomics or 3D comics are inherently innovative, though. Which is not to say a Photocomic or 3D comic couldn't be innovative, but I don't think this can be the catch-all category for them.

I like that idea.

Post subject: Category: Original Concept / Most innovative / Use of Medium
The poll is now live and I think that's the lot of them.
The poll will stay open until the evening of Sunday 9th, so you should have plenty of time to read what people have to say on the matter first.
In order for the No option to win it has to have more votes than all the Yes options combined. If it doesn't have that many votes the Yes option with the highest amount wins.
-------------------------------------------------
This thread is just for discussing whether or not we should have categories for Best Original Concept, Best Use of the Medium or Most Innovative Comic and not for anything else.
I will open a poll based on the options suggested in this thread on Sunday 2nd August between 9 and 10pm GMT and close it around the same time on Sunday 9th August.
Issues previously brought up:
Do these categories overlap too much?
Can they be combined?
