I don't think you can change votes unfortunately, so people really need to be sure when they vote.
As for posting what options are going into the polls, good idea. I'll do that later tonight.

Generally speaking, when votes come on the topics on this forum, is there any way for one to change their vote? I'm guessing there may be a fresh round of debate and some people may change minds.
Also, could you just post up about a day in advance what poll options you are going to put up? It may be useful to see if anyone has any objections / extra options before taing the polls live.

I've started up threads for Best Character and Best Costume Design.
I can't say I'm a huge fan of your name idea though, oppy.
No offence.

I know everyone is against adding too many categories, but I like "Best or Most Interesting Character". Male and Female. I think that would be a lot of fun to vote on, and also to see what characters people nominate!

I agree with best character, going for 4 was stretching it

I think we should at least discuss a “Best character” award in its own thread. But only one award for that, not “Best female character”, “Best male character”, “Best alien character”, etc.

Hmm, I like the idea of best costume design. A lot of comic artists put a lot of time into costume design, some of them even for one-off characters or multiple costume changes for characters. That kind of effort often goes underappreciated.
However, this does tend to cover long-form and story comics to a greater degree than short-form and humour comics (though not always).
I also like the name of the awards.
I'm not so sure about having "best character" categories. I assume you mean to have those as a parallel to the Oscar's Best actor/actress categories, but I don't think it's really the same, since there's a huge difference between creating a character and playing one. Plus, it adds four categories.

It's been suggested to let the actual awards coincide with the Oscars.

I'm going to start making the individual threads like Chilari suggested.
The following are pretty much a given as far as I'm concerned:
Best Comic
Best New Comic
Best Writing
Best Art
The questions to be brought up by the individual threads will be:
Should Best Art be split into Best Colour Art and Best Black and White or should there be a category for Best Non-traditional art to cover 3D comics and photocomics?
Should there be a category for Best Story Comic and Best Humour Comic and what exactly should these two be called?
Should Best Original Concept or Best Use of The Medium be included or can they be combined into a Most Innovative Comic category?
Should we have a Best Limited Series category for shorter spanning comics with a definitive end?
Should there be a Best Non-English Language category?
Should we have a Hidden Gem Award for best under-appreciated comic?
Should we have a Most Improved category?
Should we have awards for individual genres?
I'm going to run the threads without polls until Sunday and then I'll open polls based on the discussions in those threads a week later. A week after that I'll close them and we'll have our categories.
If anyone else has any other category suggestions they think should be given a thread post them here.

I think someone suggested having a "best storytelling" and "most funny" awards, which covers most comics out there, a few twice, and recognises different aspects of the comic industry. Would that work instead of best humour comic vs best story comic?

Certainly not the multitude of categories such as sci-fi, romance, gaming etc... I'd go for two broad categories, "humour" and "not humour" (tho you'd call the latter "storytelling" or something)
Genre categories are the last thing we need. It will split resources and attention. It will also create far too many categories for anyone to care, because it will look like we've got so many awards we're just giving them away without merit. It will also mean someone constantly complaining that their genre isn't catered for.
As for your broad categories, "storytelling" can't be the opposite to "humour". Many humour comics also tell a story.

I'm not too fussed.

I'm against it for reasons already discussed
Chilari wrote:
Non-English comics - do we have the resources to do this or not?
I don't think so. Also a vote on this would be heavily biased towards fairly common language (such as Spanish) comic over something a little more obscure (such as Finnish), unless they were both translated into english, in which case you could just enter them into regular categories.
Chilari wrote:
Most overlooked - do we include this category or not?
I don't think there's any feasible way to set the "maximum popularity" bar
Chilari wrote:

Best newcomer is quite a good one
And, of course, Best Comic.

It seems the discussion is slowing a little, even though there are still categories to be decided upon. So here's what I suggest: for each category (or group of categories) we open a new thread with a title beginning with "Category:" followed by the category name. In those threads we discuss the individual categories, weigh up the arguments for and against, and then create a poll.
I get the impression that the main things that need deciding upon are:
*Best art - one category or two, based on colour and black and white.
*Genre categories - do we have them or not?
*Most improved - do we include this category or not?
*Non-English comics - do we have the resources to do this or not?
*Most overlooked - do we include this category or not?
Are there any other categories people think should be included, or other suggested categories anyone thinks should not be?
